El «Cartucho de pescao” se le atribuye a Pepe Luis Vázquez, el genial torero sevillano del barrio de San Bernardo de Sevilla, si bien ya parece que anteriormente otros toreros utilizaban este inicio sorpresivo de faena. Situado el torero más o menos en el tercio, se cita al toro con la muleta plegada y sujeta con la mano izquierda mientras la espalda queda en la mano derecha que se apoya graciosamente en la cadera. Una vez se arranque el toro, el torero debe mantener la muleta plegada hasta que vea el momento de echársela al animal, desplegando la muleta y dándole así el pase, sin cambiarle el viaje. También se le llama «Pase de sorpresa».
